Any token’s decimals
Contracts store whole numbers; a token’s decimals say where the point goes. USDC uses 6, WBTC 8, most tokens 18.
Worth knowing
- Gas prices are quoted in gwei: 20 gwei = 0.00000002 ETH per unit of gas.
- Approvals are stored in base units. An “unlimited” approval is 2²⁵⁶ − 1, a 78-digit number.
- Wei is the smallest unit: 1 ETH = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei.
Questions
How many wei are in one ether?
One ether is 10¹⁸ wei: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. One gwei is 10⁹ wei, so one ether is also 1,000,000,000 gwei.
What is gwei used for?
Gas prices. They are tiny fractions of an ether, so wallets and explorers quote them in gwei: a 20 gwei gas price means each unit of gas costs 0.00000002 ETH.
Why does this converter refuse some numbers?
Because a blockchain cannot store them. Wei is indivisible, so 1.5 wei or 0.0000000001 gwei do not exist; rather than silently rounding, the converter tells you.
Does the same work for tokens?
Yes. Use the decimals section. Each ERC-20 token declares its decimals: USDC and USDT use 6, WBTC 8, and most other tokens 18.
