Crypto tax estimator

New
Enter or paste your trades to see the realised gain on every sale and in each tax year, under FIFO, LIFO or average cost, and the cost basis you still hold. Nothing leaves your browser.

Not tax advice

An estimate to help you check your own records. Tax rules differ by country: many also count swapping one coin for another, or spending crypto, as a sale, and add allowances, holding periods or rules on which coins you sold. Ask a tax adviser before you file.

Method

FIFO: the coins you bought first are the first you sell.

Which one applies depends on where you pay tax. The UK and Canada use an average cost (the UK adds same-day and 30-day rules this estimator does not apply), and the US uses FIFO unless you identify the coins you sold.

Questions

Which method should I use?

The one your tax authority requires or accepts. The UK and Canada use an average cost (the UK with extra same-day and 30-day rules), and the US uses FIFO unless you identify the coins you sold. Switch methods here to see how much the choice changes the result.

What counts as a sale?

Here, every sell you enter. In many countries swapping one coin for another, or paying for something with crypto, is a sale too: enter it as a sell at its dollar value at the time, and the coin you received as a buy.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The estimator runs in your browser. Trades you type, paste or load stay on your device, and the CSV download is made on your device too.

Why does it say I sold more than I held?

A sale uses coins bought earlier. If a buy is missing, or coins arrived by transfer, the extra coins are counted at zero cost, which overstates the gain. Add the missing buys to correct it.

Can I use my portfolio?

Yes. Export your transactions from the portfolio tracker as CSV and paste or load the file here. Transfers between wallets are left out, because they are not sales.
